High vitamin B12 levels
During the B12 conference, attention will also be paid to the misconceptions that exist about ‘high B12 levels’.
- When are high B12 levels in the blood harmless (even desirable) and when should you apply a differential diagnosis to find out underlying malignancies that can cause these high levels.
- Dutch NHS B12 protocol states that testing after supplementation is not desirable, because the B12 values mean nothing as soon as supplementation takes place: B12 value goes up (good!). Nevertheless, testing B12 after supplementation still happens, after which the treatment is often wrongly stopped with all the consequences for the patient, who unfortunately will experience a relapse in symptoms when the cause of the B12 deficiency is not solved.
